POEM OF THE DAY: ONCE A ROSE BY GIDEON NWAIKWU

------once a rose- ------

:;

Pageantry!  thy royal petals now decay..,
Upon this loam once it bloomed.,
Then luscious bees thine nectar strawed.,
But now fleas buzze over thy doom.,

:;

Glamorous! Your primness passed like a haze.,
Your petals, once charmed the eyes with brilliance. ,
But now a shadow, without a trace.,
Alone, in the wake of your forsaken fans.,

:;

Rose!  Never did you wear facial vains like a hag.,
You, whose pompous stride sneak through death's whirlpool..,?
You, whose virile petals knew no woe!
Could fall cheaply to age's entangled web.,
Now sagged the once beauteous petals to the ground.

:;

see ! thy lovely petals lie currupt..
in woeful odorous tatters in the mud.,
Now priced your spent-elegance, are vile corrupting moths. ,
And your primness be tossed to the worms.

:;

Once proud like the full-cooing moon.,
Once fresher than the ember dew..
But how soon thy charms discharge,how sadly soon.,?
How sad and soon thy fairness says adieu!
Half-fallen, thy faded  petals drool.,
And in sickening sadness, dying!
